Video: JFK’s bodyguard from Maghera recalls shock of assassination news

A MAGHERA man who served as bodyguard for JFK during his visit to Ireland in 1963, says hearing the shock news of the President’s assassination just months later, remains vivid.

Mick McElkenny served with the Irish Army and was assigned to protect the most powerful man in the world.

Speaking to the Mid Ulster Mail, the 81-year-old said he can remember how good it was to shake President Kennedy’s hand, and the deep affection which Irish people had towards the American leader.

“I will never forget hearing that news, people talked about it for days, weeks and months after,” said Mick.
