After what has been one of the most hotly contested competitions this year, we can now reveal the winner of the Mid Ulster Mail - Chip Shop of the Year.
Maxi’s Grill in Magherafelt have beat off stiff competition from across Mid Ulster to claim the 2015 title.
The competition attracted hundreds of text vote and postal votes, as our top chippies vied for the title.
Mark McElwee who run’s Maxi’s Grill said he was both surprised and delighted with the recognition for his chip shop, which is relatively new to the Mid Ulster area.
“We are all delighted here to have won the title, it’s something to be proud of and it will also give us a bit of a boost,” he said.
“When we spotted this competition, we thought we would enter, but we knew that we were up against a lot of really good chippies, not only here in Magherafelt, but in Cookstown and all the other towns.
“So it is a great honour to win the top spot.”
He added: “I would like to thank our hard-working staff, who have really helped build up our reputation.
“And also to all our customers who came out and voted for us. Thank you very much, we look forward to serving more great food in the years ahead.
“All of our fish, meat, chicken and produce are locally sourced for freshness and quality.”
The level of response from the public has proved how much they appreciate the excellent food they are served
Michael McGlade, Multimedia Editor of the Mid Ulster Mail who presented the award, said it was “a privilege to recognise the excellence” of the local chip shops.
“This has been a fantastic opportunity to really showcase some of the fantastic chippies we have here in Mid Ulster,” he said.
“And the level of response from the public has proved how much they appreciate the excellent food they are served.
“We would like to offer our hearty congratulations to Maxi’s Grill. They clearly have the recipe for success and we wish them every success for the future.”
