Warning for motorists after handbag is stolen from car

POLICE in Coleraine are asking motorists not to leave valuables unattended in their vehicles.

The warning comes as a handbag was stolen from a parked car at Castleroe.

Neighbourhood Inspector Catherine Magee said, “It is really important that people don’t leave valuables unattended in their cars, or try to hide items such as handbags under seats in the hope that they won’t be seen or found.

“Thieves are well aware of all the hiding places inside vehicles, so please don’t take a chance that your car won’t be broken into.

“Remember that crimes such as this don’t only happen to other people, it could happen to you. Leaving items on open display provides an easy opportunity for criminals, so only bring those items that you are prepared to carry with you.

“Removing all valuables will also help to discourage thieves from returning to the Borough especially if their unlawful activities have proved fruitless,” stressed Inspector Magee.

Officers will be paying attention to car parks, but if you notice any activity that raises your suspicions please contact the police straight away.
