Watch: Fears for jobs expressed at Magherafelt public meeting

The public meeting in the Bridewell, Magherafelt, to discuss the latest round of public sector cuts heard members of trade unions and community groups express their fears for jobs and services.

Up to 20,000 public sector jobs are expected to be lost in the next four years and public services, such as transport could be completely removed in parts of Mid-Ulster.

Mid Ulster Trade Unions spokesperson Harry Hutchinson said: “In addition cuts in benefits, which could impact on Mid-Ulster claimants to the tune of £40m, due to this being an area highly dependent on welfare. These cuts will have a devastating impact on peoples health and welfare and on the NI Economy.

“Trade Unions across Northern Ireland plan to organise with community groups to build a campaign against austerity. Several Unions are currently balloting for a strike on March 13.
