A FAMILIAR face to many a wedding guest, Justin McGurk, front man of the fabulous Justin and the Boogie Men, showcases his own song writing and performing talents at the Burnavon, Cookstown on Thursday 3rd October at 8pm.
Justin will be joined on the night by special guest Ardboe songbird Shauna McStravock, whom Justin has recorded a new duet with called “Girl like you, Boy like me.”
Away from the ‘bread and butter’ of the wedding circuit, where Justin and the Boogie Men are hugely successful, however, writing and recording his own music really puts fire in Justin’s belly.“Get the party started” is the title track from his newly released ninth album, and it is proving equally as popular. Justin’s songs have been described as “Cool country with an edge; blending the old, the new and the unexplored.”
His love of writing has been nourished by the time he’s spent in the country music capital of the world, Nashville.
He first went there in 2005 after he won a singing competition called ‘Search for a New Country Star’ and was flown, all expenses paid, to Tennessee to represent Ireland in the CMA global artists’ showcase, performing alongside legends such as Kenny Rogers, Keith Urban and Alan Jackson. The following year he returned to Nashville to write his second album along with key players Kris Bergnes, who has written songs for Garth Brooks, and Josh Kear, whose work has been recorded by the likes of Carrie Underwood.
Justin said: “I write songs all the time and an idea can come to you anywhere, any time. You might be cutting the grass and a melody or a lyric will pop into your head and that’s it. I get ideas from all sorts of things but I think the best songs I’ve written are ones that have come from my own life experience.”
That is certainly true of the song that Justin is now undoubtedly best known for – a Co-written ballad called ‘If I could Take Your Place’. Written in 2010 after Justin’s wife, Roisin’s diagnosis with breast cancer, the song represented a release valve for Justin - it became the title track for his next album, released in 2012, and also went on to win him the ‘best song’ accolade at the Northern Ireland Country Music Awards. He’s busier than ever especially with country music.
Justin’s special guest on the night Shauna McStravock is also a familar face on the country scene and she has been busy with gigs and Weddings since her album ‘In the middle of Love’ which launched in March this year.
Shauna was awarded the Best New Female 2012 at the Ulster Country Music Awards and is currently in the process of releasing another single in the coming weeks to be accompanied with a video as well.
