Saturday night was an evening reminding us of the summer just past with an eagerly awaited contest between two teams confident of getting to the quarter final.

Sarsfields came out of the blocks quicker with quick scores from Johnny Reynolds and a hungry Tommy McAlinden.

Points from Paul McGeown, Michael Stevenson, Eamon McGeown and Tommy McAlinden left the halftime score with Sarsfields firmly in the lead 1-7 to 0-3.

The second half started well for the St Mary’s men with two quick points by before a hat trick of points by Paul McGeown took the wind from Granemore’s sails.

The next point was an example of the hunger to win in this hoops team. A high ball was pumped in and appeared to be drifting wide when from nowhere Collie Stevenson appeared and out jumped a defender far taller than him to prevent the ball from going dead. He laid the ball back to his brother Michael who then slipped the ball over the bar with a huge applause coming from the supporters.

The final score was Sarsfields 1-14 Granemore 0-9.

Sarsfields now play St Patrick’s Cullyhanna on Saturday in Athletic Grounds at 7.45pm.
