Brave fight from South Thirds

South Antrim Thirds 2

Bangor Seconds 5

South Antrim Thirds put up a brave fight against Bangor Seconds who are riding high in Junior League 2, but unfortunately for the locals it was a familiar story of a good performance but with no points to show for it.

There is little but pride to play for this season for South Thirds, but one bright spot was the performance of Gareth Campbell who has stepped up from the 4th eleven and made an immediate impact. Gareth crowned an excellent performance with a fine goal in the second half.

The game had started poorly for South as they conceded a soft goal in the first few minutes. The Lisburn team struck back shortly afterwards however, when Gordon McCandless took a long corner and drove a fierce cross into the circle from 30 yards out only to see the Bangor goalie deflect the ball into the net for an ‘own goal’. Bangor added a second a few minutes later and a third just before half time to give the visitors the upper hand.

South started the second half well and good approach work from Aaron Mckeown and Nathan Alister combined to create an opening for Gareth Campbell who finished clinically to grab his first goal for the third eleven. South almost drew level when Aaron McKeown got on the end of a cross only to see the Bangor goalie save his first time shot. This was to be South’s last good chance, and Bangor added to more before the end to give the score a flattering look for the visitors.

Overall this was a good display from South against the best team in the league.
