Cookstown held by Priorians

Cookstown Ladies 1st XI 2 Priorians 2

COOKSTOWN travelled to Londonderry at the weekend hoping to keep the momentum from their previous victory against Omagh. Priorians would prove to be difficult opposition and a very physical test for the ladies with both sides keen to grab three points in the league.

Cookstown started the first half as the dominating side, pressurising the Priorians defence and pushing into the circle. C. Brown and L. Johnston were both unlucky not to get the advantage in the early minutes as both seeing their touches going wide.

Priorians made a few speedy breaks but were quickly shut down by the Cookstown defence. As the half wore on Cookstown again pressurised the Prior defence with a number of penalty corners and breaking down the defensive play. E. Harpur found her form and first goal of the season 10 minutes before the end of the half.

Having received the ball at the left edge of the circle, Harpur was able to strike the ball and hit the top right corner of the net. A super goal and well deserved for the ladies! Unfortunately before half time Priorians worked hard and were able to equalise, just before the half time break.

In the second half Priorians came out fighting and Cookstown found themselves under pressure in both midfield and defence. The ladies knew they had to compose themselves and link their passes if they were going to gain the upper hand.

Their break came 15 minutes into the second half with Cookstown breaking down the right hand side of the pitch. Jessica Richardson received the ball outside the circle, drove forward and slotted the ball calmly past the Priorians keeper. At 2-1 both sides knew the game was still far from over and the play continued to go from end to end. Cookstown failed to convert a number of short corners and Priorians were able to make a quick break into the Cookstown circle.

Unfortunately they were able to equalise again just before the final whistle and at 2-2, the ladies had to settle for a point in a game that they knew they should of won. This weekend the ladies face tough opposition against Portadown at home at 1pm.
