Cookstown lose out to league leaders.

Cookstown Ladies 1st XI 1 Victorians 6

THE Ladies travelled to Belfast this week for a difficult tie against league leaders Victorians. Having lost a few players due to illness, the girls knew they were going to have a tough fight on their hands. They were determined to work hard and come out fighting.

Victorians took the early lead in the first half with quick breaks and long balls played up the pitch to the high forwards. The Cookstown defence worked well but could not contain the speedy opposition. In the first 15 minutes, the ladies saw themselves 2-0 down and knew they would have to use similar tactics if they were going to break the Victorians defence.

The Cookstown goal came from a break out of defence by R. Smyth. She found R. Stewart in midfield who knocked it passed the Victorians side with J. Richardson. An early shot in the circle by C. Brown was saved by the keeper only for R. Stewart to get the rebound on the reverse.

Despite getting a goal back, Victorians continued to challenge Cookstown and before the half time break, they managed to get another two goals. After half time the ladies knew they would have to work extra hard to contain the league leaders.

Unfortunately despite two short corners and various attacks, Cookstown could not break through the Victorians side and they managed to get another two goals before the final whistle. The ladies face another tough challenge this week with Civil Service at home, a team which has been performing well in Senior One this season.
