Feast of football at St Michael’s tournament

Sixteen teams contested the coveted Feargal McConville Cup and St Michael’s Shield and as expected, the competition was intense.

As usual the whole affair was very well organised, with St Michael’s students refereeing the nail biting games and the North Armagh primary school teachers being treated to ample refreshments and a tasty hot dinner, courtesy of Anne and her staff in the canteen.

The main attraction was of course the football and there was certainly no shortage of excellent technique being displayed by the budding young gaelic footballers.

All who contributed made it an enjoyable day and inevitably in the end there had to be winners and runners-up.

St Brendan’s Craigavon, Tannaghmore B, St Teresa’s A and St Anthony’s were the remaining four in the St Michael’s Shield with St Teresa’s being being the eventual winners defeating the Tannaghmore B side, which was an extremely close battle.

St John the Baptist, Ballymacrickett PS, Tannaghmore A and St Francis challenged for the Feargal McConville Cup with St John the Baptist finishing as deserved winners and St Francis A being gallant runners-up.

After a lot of debate the player of the tournament went to St John the Baptist for a second consecutive year, the worthy winner being Tom Weir.

St Michael’s Principal and staff value this occasion as a very special sporting event in the school’s calendar and evidently hope that in the future many of these young boys will represent the school’s Treanor, Herald and MacLarnon Cup teams.
