McGinnhappy for old team-mates

The Aberdeen man, who played for the Candy Stripes during the 2008 final, which Bohemians won on penalties, also believes it’s important to never forget about your roots.

“I watched it on TV and it was nice to see Derry win,” he admitted.

“A lot of thanks have to go to them for getting me where I am now, so it was definitely nice to see my old team-mates doing well in the final, the likes of Gerard Doherty, Ruaidhri Higgins and Kevin Deery.

“It was also nice for Declan Devine and the supporters, who had a great day out at the final and Derry winning the cup is also great for the whole city and I was over the moon for the boys.

“There are boys still at Derry who helped me massively when I joined Derry the likes of Ruaidhri Higgins, Kevin Deery, Gerard Doherty and Mark Farren. Paddy (McCourt) also helped me big time when I made the move from Derry to Celtic, he helped me settle in well, which was nice.

“I always keep a close eye on my old clubs like Dungannon Swifts and Derry City, I think it’s always important to keep an eye on our roots.”

The in-form winger, who has become a goal-scoring sensation for Craig Brown’s side and is eyeing his eighth goal in eight games when his old club Celtic visit Pittodrie tomorrow, was bitterly disappointed after Northern Ireland’s 1-1 draw against Azerbaijan, in their World Cup qualifier, at Windsor Park, on Wednesday night.

“It’s always disappointing, when you see the amount of possession we had and the amount of chances we had, to only take a point,” stated the ex-Dungannon Swifts man.

“But I feel we have to take confidence from how we played and I think we are now at stage where we are playing nice football and creating chances, so yes it was disappointing that we only got a point, but we have to take good credit from the way we played and they for the amount of chances we created.

“Things have been brilliant, thank god, so long may that continue, I’m just happy to be playing, week in, week out and playing with a smile on my face.

“We have a big game on Saturday and yes I would be happy to get on the score-sheet,” concluded the SPL Player of the Month for October.
