Clinical Carrick make Killymoon pay

Killymoon Rangers 0

Carrick Rangers 5

KILLYMOON had a tough outing on Monday night as newly relegated Carrick Rangers showed their league credentials in a one-sided game in Cookstown.

The first effort of note from either of the teams was a Carrick Rangers free kick on 7 minutes which was cleared by the home defence. D Kelly and J Addis had shots blocked and wide.

Killymoon then created a few chances of their own Johnny Young turned his man and shot over from a free kick S Purvis headed the ball on and Warren Smith was unable to get a decisive touch. Carrick took advantage and broke up field. Killymoon cleared the ball for a corner and, from the resultant kick, another shot was saved.

On 30 minutes Carrick keeper S Steele fouled Marc Harkness with his back to goal with the referee producing a yellow card, allowing Steele to stay on the pitch. Steven McElhatton took the spot kick and Steele saved the penalty with the rebound being cleared.

Carrick opened the scoring on 37 minutes with Aaron Harmon on target and made it 2-0 on 45 minutes with Daniel Kelly getting his first of the night.

The visitors had the better of the second half. Gary Stewart came to the home team’s rescue with a save after the offside trap had been sprung.

Adam Dick ran at the Killymoon defence and his shot was deflected for a corner. From the subsequent set piece Daniel Kelly scored to make it 3-0 with 55 minutes played.

Killymoon had a free kick 30 yards out which hit the wall allowing Carrick to break but Stewart saved again.

However, Adam Dick scored with a header for Carrick on 61 minutes to make it 4-0. Killymoon then introduced fresh legs with M Hughes, G McGaw and R Greer coming on.

Carrick had a free kick narrowly wide from the edge of the box before Killymoon had a chance: Johnny Young’s left wing cross fell to Gareth McGaw who saw his long range effort tipped over the bar and Warren Smith had a shot saved.

Carrick Rangers made it 5-0 on the night when Kyle Owens punished a mistake on 82 minutes. In the dying minutes Killymoon were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box with Johnny Young’s shot going just over the bar.
