Coagh through in NI League Cup

Dergview 0

Coagh United 3

Coagh got straight back on the wagon after their 6-1 defeat on Saturday but at a cost - Colin Donaldson, Scott McGeown, William Ferguson and Steven Park are now all out of Saturday’s league encounter away to Dergview.

On the plus side Jamie Holmes came on and scored, as did the returning Scott McCordick. Saturday’s game at the Riverside kicks off at 3pm.

Scott McCordick’s 13-minute strike paved the way for the visitors who rubber-stamped their victory in this Northern Ireland League Cup game with late strikes by Jason Gillespie and teenager Jamie Holmes.

Home skipper Colin Robinson was red-carded for his part in an off-the-ball altercation just shy of the hour mark. Robinson’s dismissal came at a time when the Darragh Park outfit was threatening an equaliser but once United grabbed their second it was always going to be bridge too far for Richard Clarke’s side.

A dreaded penalty miss by striker Darren Higginbotham at 2-0 summed up Dergview’s night.

Coagh just about edged the early exchanges and on 13 minutes they took the lead when midfielder Jamie Tomelty cut in from the left to tee up McCordick who first timed a shot inside Jack Boggs’ left upright.

Dergview’s hopes of a comeback suffered a hammer blow when Robinson was sent off after clashing with Coagh forward Gillespie, who then rubbed salt into the wounds by scoring from the penalty spot after Maxwell was adjudged to have handled in the box.

Higginbotham somehow blazed his spot kick wide and in the closing minutes the visitors broke to net a third, Tomelty’s sublime pass picking out teenager Jamie Holmes to slide past Boggs. Coagh will play Lisburn Distillery away in the next round.
