Coagh United glad to hear the final whistle

Coagh United 1 Knockbreda 0

Both teams started brightly in this match with Scott McCordick twice going close from Stephen Park and Roy Smyth passes.

At the other Miguel Chimes neat foot work got him a shot on target, moments later Tuda Murphy, back from injury in the Coagh goal, made two more saves. From Connor Corey’s long surging run from the back he outpaced the Coagh back line only for Murphy to make the save.

A moment later Paul young’s attempted header was again saved by the Coagh number one. Both sides continued with the excellent display of end to end football but good defending and goal keeping meant no goals after fifteen minutes. Knockbreda’s Johnny Montgomery was first into the referee’s book for descent after Coagh were awarded a free on the half way line.

Coagh’s Roy Smith shot twice at the keeper while Scott McCordick just failed to get his shot on target. As the heavy rain and wind came Coagh forced the first corner of the match, McCordick’s long kick found Hawe but Park just could not control his Captain’s back header and the chance was lost. As the sun returned Miguel Chimes had a thirty yard free kick off the wall and moments later Jim McMenimen did exactly the same thing only this time from twenty yards.

On the half hour mark Knockbreda had Chris Watters shot cleared off the line by Stephen Hawe. Miguel Chimes free kick again put the Coagh back line under a lot of pressure but they somehow held on. On thirty nine minutes Knockbreda’s number seven Stephen Garrett ran the length of the pitch to just shoot over while the home sides Stephen Park forced a corner after linking well with Chris Guiney.

The Second half started with free kick expert Miguel Chimes shooting over from twenty yards. The home sides first run at goal got a goal. Scott McCordick and Roy Smyth linked well for Smyth to finally dispatch the goal past the wrong footed Paul Mateer.

From the restart Chimes again came close while the Coagh keeper Murphy made two excellent stops from McQuaide and Young. Garth Reid fouled Chimes on the edge of the area but again the number nines free kick hit the wall.

As the visitors pressured they forced three corners in a row, Chimes first was miss-handled by Murphy but Calderwood forced it out of play. Knockbreda’s Paul Young had a go from the other side but Aaron Thornton’s clearing header gave them their third corner. This time the brave Stephen Lamont took a full blow to the head from Chimes boot to save the goal.

Garrett and Calderwood went in the book as the game hotted up. McCordick and Smyth again caused havoc with the visitors back line but the keeper made the save at the second attempt.

Knockbreda made their second change of the match; earlier Joe McDonnell replaced Michael McQuaide while Jordon Clarke came on for Stephen Garrett. Both side again missed chances as the match moved into the last five. Coagh made a triple change in the last five, on came Dallas Kidd and Stretton for Reid McCordick and Gardiner.

In Knockbreda’s final attack, Aaron Thornton’s short back header nearly caught Tuda Murphy out but the International improvised and the save was made. Coagh’s Paul Stretton had a left foot shot that went wide off the post while Dallas and Kidd linked well for Roy Smyth but again the save was made.

In the end Coagh were glad to hear the final whistle and another three points were secured.
