COOKSTOWN Olympic travelled to Carrickfergus last Saturday to play Red Star in the league but lost by three goals to two. Both teams took a while to get going but after 10 minutes Red Star rattled the Olympic cross bar and it was 17 minutes before Olympic threatened from a Mark Loughran corner that Ryan O’Neill headed over.
Three minutes later and the post saved Olympic from another Red Star free kick. Then on 22 minutes Liam Mullan fired a cross into the box and Richard McMenemy headed over when well placed.
Two minutes later and a big decision from the official saw Olympic denied a goal when the ball crossed the line from Liam Hoy but no goal was given. Olympic did get a goal on 27 minutes when a Conor O’Hare run into the box saw a penalty awarded and this was converted by Ryan O’Neill. Just before half time Olympic had another chance as a Mark Meenan cross was headed wide by Richard McMenemy.
The second half was a pretty even match but Olympic conceded three goals from free kicks after 50, 55 and 75 minutes when there did not appear to be any real threat and so they found themselves three one down. With six minutes to go they grabbed a goal from a corner headed goal wards by Johnny O’Neill that the Red Star keeper pushed into his own net. Olympic then enjoyed possession until the end but there were no further goal chances.
