Desertmartin miss out on runner’s up spot

After five tough away games in the space of 14 days, Desertmartin bid to be runners up in the league came to an abrupt end when they were defeated 3-0 at Brantwood last Saturday.

Desertmartin have a cup semi-final this Tuesday and a cup final on Friday evening. With the league presentation dinner some 7 weeks off, one has to question why the league want to cramp in so many game in so short of time.

This Tuesday Desertmartin are away to Newtowne, Limavady in the semi-final of the Crawford Cup kick off 6-45pm and on Friday they play Ballynure O.B. in the final of the O’Gorman Cup at Moyola Park F.C. kick off 7-30pm.

As derbies goes this was as exiting as it gets, good football, plenty of goals, played in a highly competitive manner.

Sky Blues opened the scoring through Vitalie, shortly afterwards Dean Mulholland equalised from the penalty spot. With 10 minutes remaining Vitalie restored Sky Blues lead with a well taken headed goal.

Just before the interval Luke Hamilton capitalised on a goal keeping error to put the Swifts back on equal terms again.

After the break both teams tried to get the upper hand, with nothing between them both keepers were busy and were in no mood to give any quarter.

However for the first time in the the game the Swifts got their noses in front when Tommy Spillane rose high above everyone to rocket a header home from a Mulholland corner kick, that man Vitalie was not finish yet as he brought the Sky Blues level.

With a few minutes left Darren Bartlett secured all points for the Swifts with a good low strike from the edge of the box. On the balance of play a draw would have been a fair result. However the points secured the Swifts 4th spot in the league

On Friday evening last Desertmartin Football Club held a benefit table quiz in aid of David Junkin.

David fractured his leg representing the club earlier this season. A sum of £450 was raised and presented to David at the end of the evening. Desertmartin Football Club would like to thank all those attended and also thank Moyola and Brantwood Football Clubs who sent generous donations.

A thanks was also extended to Billy McIroy [Quiz Master] and Valerie for organising the event
