Football: Cookstown Youth Colts canter to victory over Lurgan in NI Cup

Cookstown Colts U11 played their first round game of the Northern Ireland (NIBFA) Cup against Lurgan Town U11 on Saturday.

The game was played in dreadful weather conditions that included rain, wind and hailstones but to the credit of both teams, the players played out a wonderful hard fought

From the onset, Cookstown Colts put on a disciplined display that overcame a initial Lurgan Town onslaught, with a classic counter attack from McCallion and Ferguson, that resulted in Cookstown Colts opening the scoring with a well struck shot from Smith.

The hard working and improving defence of Ruddell, McKernon and Donaghy contained Lurgan Town until they conceded a unlucky goal from a corner.

Cookstown Colts pushed hard in the second half with skillful tactics and kept the pressure on Lurgan Town, resulting in a wonderful debut goal from Henry.

The victory was sealed from a great work team ethic in difficult conditions personified by Jeffers, Anderson, Armstrong and Harvey.

Mention should also be made of the goalkeeper Taylor who made some fantastic saves to ensure a victory to the next round of the NIBFA Cup.

Cookstown Youth made the long journey to Belfast to play their first cup game of the NIBFA Cup season against Springfield Stars.

Weather conditions where horrendous and played its outcome on the match.

In the first half Cookstown Youth fought to defend a Springfield team who moved the ball around well with goalkeeper C. Devlin and defence of A.Devlin , Hamilton and J. Devlin working hard to repel Springfield’s attack.

Cookstown Youth started to get a foothold in the game and took the lead against the run of play through the impressive Sh O’Hare . Springfield continued to dominate and got a deserved equaliser to leave the half time score 1 - 1.

The second half was a very even affair with a lot of end to end play and chances at both ends. Weather conditions started to really affect the young Cookstown Youth team with forced changes and tactical positions, resulting in two quick fire goals by Springfield. Cookstown rallied and the midfield of impressive Farley , Se O’Hare and hardworking Davey , McAleer and O’Neill created chances for the skillful Falls, who scored a wonderful goal to reduce the score line.

Cookstown Youth were in the ascendency during this period of the game. Striking the post and crossbar with chances. Springfield broke down field to score a decisive goal in this game to make it 4 - 2 . The end to end play continued with Falls getting his second and Springfield scoring again. Final score was 5 - 3 to Springfield.

A Special mention has to go to C.Devlin and Sh O’Hare for goal keeping duties to day. Well done today boys in probably the worst conditions you will ever encounter.


Our ever popular Development Centre returns to the Mid Ulster Sports Arena this Friday 7th February 2014. Coaching sessions will start at 6.30pm sharp , and players are asked to attend MUSA from 6pm to facilitate registration. The sessions will finish at 7.30pm.

The cost is £3 per night for the duration of this incoming Development Centre term.
