ARMAGH 2 MOYOLA PARK 5
Moyola’s U17 team, sponsored by Henry Brothers, travelled to Armagh to play on the new 4G surface at Holm Park. on a Saturday morning which saw the teams play through rain, hail, wind and sunshine.
Playing with the wind in their backs Moyola’s first chance came in the first minute with Stuart’s close range shot deflected wide.
On the 20 minute mark an instinctive clearance by Evans from an Armagh corner found Flanagan on the half way line. He beat his marker and crossed low for McAllister to tuck a low shot past the stricken keeper.
Ten minutes later McLaverty crossed to find McElhatton in space, sliding in Moyola’s second.
Before the break he struck again, McLaverty’s shot palmed away by the keeper and McElhatton was quickest to react to the loose ball knocking the ball into the empty net.
On the verge of half time Armagh pulled a goal back scoring from a corner when the deflected clearance was poked home from close range.
The second half saw Moyola pick up where they left off in horrible weather conditions.
Stuart again won the ball to play in Flanagan who raced into the area, held up the ball, and then tucked it beyond the reach of the keeper into the far corner.
McLaverty headed onto the angle of the goals from a corner, before Doyle made it five for the Moyola lads.
McAllister played a one-two with McAtamney on the right and the full back crossed to the edge of the area. Doyle drove in from the left wing, controlled on his chest and half volleyed past the keeper into the top corner.
A super goal finishing off a superb piece of passing.
Armagh scored with the last kick of the ball as the Moyola players disputed a throw-in as a consolation.
This was another fantastic performance from the Moyola team to wrap up the three points.
Moyola Park FC Notes
Due to the heavy overnight rain last Saturday’s Fourth Round tie in the Coca Cola IFA Intermediate Cup between Limavady United and Moyola Park was postponed due to Limavady Showgrounds being declared unplayable.
This game has been rescheduled for Saturday at the same venue with a 3pm kick off.
On Thursday 30 January at 2pm Northern Ireland take on the Czech Republic in an U17 international friendly fixture at Mill Meadow.
Northern Ireland’s U17 manager, former international Stephen Robinson, has the recently retired David Healy on his coaching staff.
Healy is of course the leading goal scorer for Northern Ireland and will long be remembered for many iconic goals at Windsor Park especially the only goal in a World Cup victory over England in September 2005.
This game provides an excellent opportunity for South Derry football fans to see some potential stars of the future in action.
