Old rivals match ends in draw

TOBERMORE United drew 1-1 when they played old rivals Coagh at Fortwilliam Park last Friday evening in an entertaining derby game played in front of a good crowd.

Coagh began in determined mood clipping Willie Hassan’s cross bar with a speculative lob with only 5 minutes on the clock but it was Tobermore who drew first blood with 25 minutes gone when Johnny Yorke could only parry a Sean Henneghan shot and in the melee that followed the ball ended up in the back of the net going in off Aaron Thornton.

Thornton however made amends 10 minutes later when he rose for a free header inside the Tobermore 18 yard box and levelled the scores with a firm header.

Coagh had most of the play in the first half with Hassan the busier of the two keepers and he had to be at his best making a tremendous double save to prevent ex teammate Aaron Campbell from putting Coagh in front.

The second half was a more even affair with both sides creating plenty of chances but unable to take any of them.

Hassan made another superb stop to deny Coagh a winner and at the other end David McClements could have secured all three points for Tobermore late on when his shot from outside the box beat Yorke but thundered of the crossbar.

A draw was probably a fair result but both sides know that they will need to be more clinical in front of goals if they are to pick up much needed points.
