Olympic draw thriller

Larne Olympic 3

Cookstown Olympic 3

COOKSTOWN Olympic, sponsored this season by Moe’s Bar, Cookstown, made the journey to Larne to play Larne Olympic Res and eventually had to settle for a three all draw.

Both sides probed for an early opening with Larne claiming to have the ball in the Cookstown net after 10 minutes but the official disallowed it after agreeing that it had actually bounced off the top of the net and back into play for Larne to score.

Four minutes later and Connor O’Reilly crossed to Paul McVey who slipped it to Mickey O’Hare but he shot over while on 25 minutes Ryan Devlin squared the ball across the goals only to see Johnny O’Neill narrowly fail to convert. Larne were passing the ball about a lot but route one gave them the opening goal after 30 minutes when the Olympic defence was caught out.

In the second half Olympic came out quickly and on 47 minutes Ryan O’Neill crossed and saw Rory McGranaghan’s shot cleared off the line but then two minutes later Olympic equalized from a direct free kick from Ryan O’Neill.

Olympic then took the lead after 53 minutes when a Ryan O’Neill cross produced a diving header from Connor O’Reilly and the lead was extended to three one on 60 minutes when a Ryan O’Neill corner was finished at the back post by Ryan Devlin. Keeper Jamie O’Neill pulled off a great save after 65 minutes but Larne came back strong and pulled two goals back after 78 and 83 minutes with Olympic on the back foot. There were chances to win the match in the remaining minutes with efforts from Liam Mullan and Darren McCabe but overall Olympic were probably happy with the point.

Team: Jamie O’Neill, C O’Reilly, E McSloy, Jonny O’Neill, M O’Hare, R McGranaghan, P McVey, R Scullion, R O’Neill, L Mullan and R Devlin. Subs M Meenan and D McCabe.
