Olympic hit five in final home game

COOKSTOWN Olympic played their last home match of the season last Saturday and eventually came away with a 5-0 win.

The score was probably not a true reflection of the match with the visitors missing a number of goal scoring opportunities but Olympic were also wasteful in front of goal.

The early pressure came from Ballyclare and their first free kick on 5 minutes saw keeper Ryan Devlin brilliantly push the shot round the post.

Olympic were slow to start and the visitors should have taken the lead after 20 minutes when the forward missed an open goal.

However, 4 minutes later Olympic took the lead when Ryan O’Neill drove a 30 yard free kick that brother Johnny headed into the net. Ballyclare still applied pressure to a lacklustre Olympic and they rocked the Olympic bar after 35 minutes but just as half time was approaching Olympic doubled their lead when Ryan O’Neill curled a 20 yard free kick into the top corner.

A more determined Olympic took the game to the visitors in the second half and they got their third goal on 47 minutes when Conor O’Reilly put a ball over the top for Richard McMenemy to then lob the keeper.

Then 5 minutes later McMenemy was put through again but the lob went wide while Conor O’Reilly then shot wide after 52 minutes. Olympic did grab their fourth on 55 minutes when O’Reilly found Eamon McSloy but his shot came off the bar but the alert Liam Hoy was on hand to slot home the rebound. Ballyclare never gave up and they missed another sitter after 57 minutes while three minutes later Olympic were awarded a penalty which Ryan O’Neill saw the keeper save at full stretch.

The fifth goal did come for Olympic on 70 minutes when Conor O’Hare crossed to the back post were Declan Doherty collected and then curled a placed shot beyond the keeper. Olympic then kept a tight grip on the remainder of the match to see out the win. Team: R Devlin.
