COOKSTOWN Olympic travelled to play 3rd Ballyclare last Saturday and after a below par performance they came away with a four one defeat.
This now puts Ballyclare in the driving seat for the league title as they have 3 games in hand of Olympic and are now only three points behind. While Olympic played well below their potential Ballyclare also had to thank their keeper who pulled off 3 great saves in the second half to prevent Olympic from scoring.
The match started well for Ballyclare as Olympic had to clear off their line after 5 minutes and then slack marking from a Ballyclare corner after 10 minutes saw an unmarked header at the back post and a one nil lead. Ten minutes later and Ballyclare had a chance to double their lead but Olympic keeper Jamie O’Neill came off his line for a smart save.
After 25 minutes the Ballyclare keeper produced a fantastic save from a Ryan O’Neill shot while they then hit the Olympic post 4 minutes later. The lead was doubled on 44 minutes again from a corner that Olympic failed to deal with. Olympic started the second half with more drive and grabbed a goal back on 50 minutes when a Liam Hoy cross was bundled over the line by Jonny O’Neill. A Ryan O’Neill goal bound shot five minutes later was somehow tipped over the bar and on 60 minutes a Liam Hoy shot was pushed round the post by the keeper.
The quick break by Ballyclare on 65 minutes saw them increase their lead with their third goal but Olympic produced a goal mouth scramble three minutes later which ended with the Ballyclare keeper again producing a telling save.
Another Ballyclare break after 75 minutes resulted in their fourth goal and ended the game as a contest.
