Cookstown Olympic 5 3rd Ballyclare OB 2
Cookstown Olympic, sponsored this season by Moe’s Bar, hosted 3rd Ballyclare Old Boys and were comfortable five two winners.
The visitors were a very physical and noisy opposition but came up against a Cookstown team who more interested in playing good football.
Cookstown were pressing right from the whistle and got their noses in front after 7 minutes when Nigel Johnston was fouled for a penalty which Ryan Devlin comfortable dispatched.
The lead was doubled on 15 minutes when Mickey O’Hare whipped in a cross that the visiting keeper fumbled and Ryan O’Neill slotted home from 10 yards.
Olympic then got their third goal on 30 minutes as Nigel Johnston played a great ball into the run of Ryan O’Neill and his shot from 20 yards was only pushed out by the keeper and Ryan Devlin was sharper to the ball and finished easily.
3rd Ballyclare did rally for a while and pulled a goal back with a slight suspicion of an offside after 42 minutes. Rather than lie down until half time Olympic pressed forward again after 44 minutes and from a Ryan O’Neill corner it was Ryan Devlin who rose at the back post to head home for the fourth Olympic goal.
In the second half Olympic started well again and were awarded another penalty after 48 minutes but this time they blasted it over the bar.
This gave 3rd Ballyclare a bit of hope and they enjoyed some more possession but Olympic provided the perfect response with their 5th goal after 55 minutes with the best move of the match. Ryan O’Neill dribbled from inside his own half beating a couple of players before finding Liam Hoy on a strong run on the right and he whipped over a pin point pass that Ryan Devlin completed with a diving header for his fourth of the match.
3rd Ballyclare now resorted to some off the ball play and things got a bit out of hand with their defender attempting a head butt which saw him dismissed. Olympic took their foot off the gas and conceded a free kick after 85 minutes which Ballyclare netted for their second goal.
