United set up Boxing Day final

Tobermore Utd 3 - 1 Dungiven (After extra time) A BRACE from Sean Henneghan and a cracker from Neil Lamont ensured Tobermore’s place in the Boxing Day Craig Memorial Cup final that once again will be played at Fortwilliam Park.

This will be Tobermore’s third appearance in a row in the prestigious final and although in the end they just about deserve to be there, Dungiven will be bitterly disappointed that it’s not them that will face Institute who defeated Newbuildings 4-2 in the other semi.

In a fairly even first half it took a hotly disputed 40th minute penalty to break the deadlock. Referee Tony Young decided that the tackle on Neil Lamont was illegal and pointed to the spot. After a delay caused by some of the incensed Dungiven players disputing the decision, Sean Henneghan stepped up and blasted the penalty kick past Darren McDermott to put the reds ahead.

The second half was a much livelier affair with Dungiven the much better side and only for Sammy Foster being on top form in the home goals they would have been on level terms much earlier than the 60th minute equaliser scored by Eoghan Quigg.

Both sides had chances in the final half hour but couldn’t find a winner. So much to the annoyance of grounds man Alvis Taylor the game went into extra time.

The next goal was always going to be very important and it was Tobermore who grabbed it when Henneghan smashed the ball past McDermot from the edge of the box with only two minutes of extra time gone.

Despite going behind again Dungiven never gave up and they created several chances to level and take the game to penalty kicks but with only 5 minutes left and as Dungiven tired, Lamont ensured victory with a good finish when he cut in from the left and gave McDermott no chance to seal the win for Tobermore.
