United stars of yesteryear pull on boots for good cause

BALLYMENA United stars of yesteryear will pull on the boots again this Wednesday night, July 6 - all for a good cause.

More than 20 former Sky Blues stars will line up to take on local church side Green Pastures at Ballymena Showgrounds.

The match will raise funds for Green Pastures’ Freedom House ministry project, a national non-profit organisation dedicated to providing a residential programme for young women suffering from eating disorders, self-harm, depression and the effects of abuse in all its forms.

Spectators attending the match, which has a 7pm kick-off, will be asked to make a donation.

The United team will be under the guidance of Alex McKee, the last Ballymena manager to win a major trophy and several members of his 1989 Irish Cup-winning team will be taking part, including Michael Smyth, John Garrett, John McKee, Dermot Doherty, John Heron, Billy Pyper and Jim Scott.

Other players from the Eighties era include John Sloan and Rab McCreery, while a number of players who played for the club in the Nineties will also be making appearances.
