Golf: Lawn rescues a '˜sticky' situation for Killymoon men

Damian Lawn was the hero for Killymoon on Sunday when he secured a dramatic win over Dungannon in the Ulster Fourball derby meeting.

Trailing 3-2 from the first leg, and with the opening four matches shared evenly, it all came down to the final pairs on the course to determine the outcome of the clash between the neighbouring rivals.

Needing to win the last two holes, Lawn and his partner, Alan Dawson, did the needful on 17 - but they certainly looked in trouble on the last hole.

Lawn, however, superbly sank a 40 feet putt from just off the front edge of the green to sweep Killymoon into the next round - in which they will now face the winners of the tie between Kilrea and Down Royal.

In the club events over the weekend at the Killymoon Club, members welcomed the return of the Friday night nine hole event.

And it was Paul Kolbohm and Larry Hill who secured the opening night victory with a 25 point total in Baltic conditions.

The on Saturday the annual Darren Clarke Trophy competition saw a good entry and produced some excellent scoring.

A 43 point tally by Denis Magee saw him take the top place on the podium, finishing just a single point ahead of Austin Quinn - with Declan McGurk coming in third with 41 points. Bryan Martin shot a level par 70 to secure the best gross prize. The divisional winners on Saturday were Kieran Rodgers, Stephen Mulholland, David Shepherd and Francis Redmond.

Garvin Trophy on Sunday Mark Molloy was won with 43 points, just pipping Stephen Hagan by virtue of a better second nine. In third was Stephen Canavan on 42 points. Bryan Martin repeated his level par round of Saturday to once again claim the gross prize.

Killymoon Ladies played in the Darren Clarke MS Charity on Thursday. Maura O’Kane won with 36 points and the runner up was Donna Mulholland with 35 points.

The front nine was won by Evadne Steele with 19 points and the back nine by Danielle Rooney with 20 points. The Grand Final of the Darren Clarke Qualifier will be held in Shandon Park on October 9.

This week the ladies will play in the Nellie Garrett Foursomes competition.
