Golf: Stevenson just pips McIvor to Captain's Tankard at Killymoon

The PGA Captain's Tankard was on offer at Killymoon on Saturday, a large field enjoying near perfect conditions for the strokeplay event.

It proved to be a tight finish as a congested leaderboard required countback to separate prizewinners. Robert Stevenson just pipped Pearse McIvor for top spot, a better closing stretch giving him the edge as both recorded nett 65.

A shot back was Michael Haycock and Bryan Martin collected the gross prize with a one under 69. In the sections Niall Doyle (67), Gerry Mallon (67), Conor McKenna (66), and Anthony Doherty (66) were winners. The best senior prize was won by Raymond Pembleton with a 67.

In the Ferguson Putter the previous Sunday a better second nine of 22 saw Rory McMullan clinch honours ahead of Kieran Rodgers and Gordon McAlister, Bryan Martin once again securing the gross prize.

There were mixed fortunes for Killymoon teams, Ernie Smith’s Ulster Fourball team exiting at the hands of Down Royal. Despite a valiant effort from the home side, they had just too much to do after a 4-1 defeat in the opening leg. They managed to reverse the outcome on home soil the deficit on holes too much to bridge.

The Sam Rutherford team began the defence of their title with the short trip to local rivals Dungannon and have given themselves an excellent chance of progressing as they only trail by 3 holes, return leg on Sunday at Killymoon.

Killymoon Ladies played in the Australian Spoons Greensomes on Thursday.

Elsbeth Cummings and Pat McConnell won with 36 points. The final will be played at Portadown Golf Club on 26th July.

Best Gross went to Diane McIvor and Oonagh McCoy with 21 points.

Mairead Heron and Kate Lennon had twos at the 13th and Anne Greaves and Sheila Doonan at the 7th.

This week the ladies will play for the prestigious Dobbin Cup sponsored by McAleer & Rushe.

The Provincial Priories Golfing Society Charity Day is set to swing into action at Killymoon, Cookstown on Tuesday 31st with an open invitation to all golfers, male and female to turn out to support local charities - Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice and the Mid-Ulster Stroke Survivors Association.

Entries of two, three and four ball teams are welcome, £30 per person includes green fees and a meal.
