Consistency the key for Maurice

AS the month of November petered out there was some involvement for Lurgan golfers in the end of the month senior competition and the usual midweek sweep.

A seven under par effort of 35 points secured Maurice Turnbull the principal net prize. This 22 handicapper was the essence of consistency with just pars or bogeys on his card. A string of net pars kept him in a challenging position through the opening seven holes. He moved up several gears on the inward seven and landed vital par figures at holes ten, eleven, seventeen and eighteen. This steady play put him a couple of points clear of his closest challenger. Runner-up with a very respectable 33 points was Hugh O’Reilly. Playing off a similar handicap Hugh managed pars on holes one and nine. A strong quartet of pars at holes eleven, fourteen, seventeen and eighteen put him well into the reckoning. However double bogeys at holes five and ten possibly cost him top spot.

Ian Harrison nabbed the third net award with a score of 32 points. This 15 handicapper was in touch at the halfway mark with useful pars at holes one, five and eight. His successful back seven comprised six pars to go alongside a bogey on the fourteenth. This big finish was of paramount importance. Once again Joe Dowey captured the gross award. This time around he took the honours with 24 gross points. A trio of pars at holes two, three and nine provided him with an early bonus. He played the back in level par thanks to two birdies, two bogeys and three pars. Holes twelve and eighteen yielded the birdies.

The rest of the challenging scores were attained by the following: 32 pts: Gopal Santokhi; 31 pts: Sean Mulvenna; 30 pts: Norman Sands, John Richardson, Brian Curran, Hugh McCloskey and Sean McClean; 29 pts: Hammie Baxter, Brian Bassett, Francie McKenna.

In the Ladies competition the big winner was Olwyn Forrester. This nineteen handicapper triumphed with a very creditable 31 points. On the day Olwyn was best served by pars at holes one, five and twelve and a vital birdie on the eleventh.
