Last few weeks of action get underway at Lisburn Golf Club

As the summer golfing season enters it’s last few weeks the finalists in the matchplay trophies have been decided.

The Hilden Cup final will be contested between two relative newcomers to the club, Joe O’Neill (10) having joined in 2012 and Neil Larmour (18) joined this year.

Neil is also in the running for the Craig Cup and still to play his Craig Cup semi-final against Ronnie McCully (15) another newcomer.

The winner here will meet old hand David Wightman (26) in the final. The McKee Cup sees a meeting between Bryan Heatherington (5) and Colin Reid (11).

The Musgrave Cup final will be contested between Gary Morrow (3) and big hitting Philip Sanaghan (16). Gary will also contest the Scratch Cup final against Paul Grant.

The final round of the Mooney Cup was due to be played last weekend but unfortunately the heavy overnight rain on Friday night caused course closure.

This competition will hopefully be completed during the last week-end in September. Leading the way after 5 rounds is Chris Moulds (1) but he could still be caught by Gary Morrow (3), Stuart MacDonald (6) or Alistair Symington (5).

The Wednesday Cup will not be decided until the last Wednesday in September. This looks like being a straight race between Billy Friars and Neil Roulston. A slip up by either player will leave the door open for the other.

Gary Morrow and Alistair Symington are also among the front runners for the new trophy presented in memory of Eddie Press. This trophy is for the most consistent golfer in club competitions over the course of the season. Among the others who could yet win this trophy are Matt Lyness, Paul Watters, Ricky Leathem and Trevor Murphy.

The only club competition played last week was the Wednesday Stableford. Alan Faloon (12) was the clear winner with 42 points, two points clear of Piers McMillan (12) and Marshall McConnell (13). Piers took second prize with a better homeward nine holes.

Once again Fortwilliam Golf Club ended the Lisburn Club’s interest in the Holt Shield.

Last year Lisburn lost to Fortwilliam in the final and this year they met up in the semi-final.

The strong Fortwilliam team won the necessary three matches to take them through to the final against Carrickfergus Golf Club. This will be Fortwilliam’s eighth final in 11 years since 2003.

The Lisburn club’s remaining chance of winning an Ulster competition this year remains with the Ulster Fourball Team under the Captaincy of Paul Smyth. The first leg of the final is due to be played this week-end at Castle Hume Golf Club in Enniskillen.

We wish Paul and his team good luck for the final.
