Good conditions for competitors taking part in Roadside Coleraine 10k challenge

Conditions were near perfect for the first running of the Roadside Coleraine 10K at the University of Ulster on Thursday evening. The race was co hosted by the University of Ulster and Springwell Running Club.

David Boyd, Managing Director of the race sponsors Roadside Garages, Coleraine welcomed the runners to the race and thanked them for supporting the race charity the Ulster Cancer Foundation. Ian Lamont, Sales Manager at Roadside set the runners on their way.

City of Derry pair Emmett McGinty and Noel Logan led the field at the end of the first lap closely followed by Paul Heron Larne AC, Pius McIntyre Foyle Valley, Brian McKee Dromore and Gary Slevin City of Derry. On the second lap Emmett made his move to complete a double having won the 5K here earlier in the year. Paul Heron came through to take second with Noel Logan third.

In the ladies race Springwell’s Gillian Wasson took the lead on the first lap and never looked back coming home to win with Lagan Valley pair Shileen O’Kane and Julie Murphy second and third.

After welcoming the runners David Boyd joined the field and completed the course in 57:59.

After the race, runners enjoyed refreshments served by the ladies of the Ulster Cancer Foundation. The prizes were presented by Ian Lamont, Sales Manager, Roadside Garages, Coleraine.

Springwell Running Club and the University of Ulster would like to thank the Race Sponsors Roadside Garages, Coleraine, for their financial support, the ladies of the Ulster Cancer Foundation for providing post race refreshments, the PSNI, the British Red Cross, the marshals who all helped to make the race a success.

Conditions were wet and windy for the Cookstown Half Marathon on Sunday. Springwell had five runners in the field. First home for the club was Johnny Wilson 1:28:49 followed by Nigel Simpson 1:35:43 (PB), Mervyn Thompson 1:48:07, Betty Deighan 1:55:46 and Davy Patterson 1:57:30 (PB).

The major prize winners were Stephen Duncan 1:09:15 and Helana Crossan 1:25:23.
