High school defeated by Wallace

Cookstown High School 2 Wallace High School 3

COOKSTOWN 1st XI crashed to their first defeat in the McCullough Cup group stage to a dogged Wallace side. Cookstown started the game very slowly with too many players lacking the assertiveness or speed of thought to perform at a winning level.

Wallace took the lead after Cookstown’s defence failed to pressurise the Wallace forward, who then proceeded to pass to the higher forward for an easy finish. Donaldson equalised at the back post after another good crashed ball into the ‘D’ by Millar and the score remained 1-1 until half time.

Tony Johnston deflected the ball home to maintain his good goal-scoring form but Cookstown soon fell to pieces after Rollins went off with a hand injury and Wallace capitalised on Cookstown’s errors. Wallace made it 2-2 with a goal mouth scramble which wasn’t dealt with by Cookstown’s defence before the Wallace forward made no mistake to bang in the winner after a costly turnover.

Despite this defeat Cookstown are still on course to make it into the semi finals as two teams qualify from each group. The boys would like to thank Mr. Cuddy for umpiring and Mr. Haycock for coaching.
