The Rainey Endowed is delighted to announce that both their Junior 1STXI and Senior 1STXI Hockey teams have reached the semi finals of the Ulster Schools’ Junior Cup and the Senior Schools’ Cup.
The Junior Team defeated Clounagh JH, Grosvenor Grammar and Coleraine HS for the Rainey to reach the Junior Cup semi final for the seventh year in a row, winning four out of the last six Junior Cup finals.
However, while the junior teams have enjoyed considerable success over the last seven years the Rainey Endowed Senior 1STXI have only ever reached the semi final of the Belfast Telegraph Senior Schools Cup once before and that was 37 years ago, in 1977, under coach Pat Walls.
That year Rainey also went on to reach their first and to date only Senior Schools Hockey Cup final. Rainey’s success that year was built on a very strong defence and on their way to the final they conceded only 1 goal, beating Omagh Academy, Cookstown HS, Banbridge Academy, Ballymena Academy and Grosvenor Grammar.
In the final Rainey would meet Regent House. Neither school had won the Cup before and sadly for Rainey the game was settled by one late goal from Regent.
This year Rainey 1STXI has defeated Limavady Grammar, Portadown College and Sullivan Upper to reach the semi final.
The semi finals of the Senior Schools Cup will be played on the 5th February, at Lisnagarvey Hockey Club, Hillsborough.
One semi final will start at 1.30pm and the other at 2.00pm, on the two pitches.
The Ulster Hockey Office, Belfast, will make the draw on the 27 January between the four schools- Rainey Endowed, Ballyclare High School, Ballymena Academy and Lurgan College.
We wish both teams good luck in their semi finals!
