TWO local hockey players were back in action for Ireland in a series of challenge matches in Germany.
Ireland claimed only their second ever victory over the current world number two side in Mannheim as they secured a 2-1 victory over the hosts.
Cookstown natives Ian Sloan and David Ames grabbed the goals that sealed an impressive victory over Germany.
Cookstown teenager Ian Sloan broke the deadlock in the sixth minute when he slammed home a drag flick. Germany responded with a goal from the vastly experienced Matthias Witthaus who scored with a deflected effort.
However, Ames scored a second for the visitors when he and Sloan exchanged passes before Ames fired home with ten minutes left on the clock.
Cookstown goalkeeper Ian Hughes was also part of the panel for the series of challenge matches.
This impressive victory adds yet another impressive scalp to their ever improving collection. This is the fifth side in the top eleven that Ireland have defeated over the last year.
