Local players fare well at top event

THE Northern Ireland Open took centre stage at the weekend with about 20 players from the Craigavon District Darts League competing against the stars of the BDO.

In the Individuals local players had plenty of wins against players from across the province with Pearse Richardson, Marty Murray and Terry Morrow all putting in excellent performances and Clive Hanna from Drumgor reaching the final 32 before losing to eventual finalist Willy van de Wiel from Holland.

On Sunday it was the Pairs event which included such players such as World ranked No 1 Stephen Bunting and at least six of the top ten ranked players in the BDO, but all this meant nothing to two local players Shane Lennon and Ray Farrell as they threw superb darts all the way to the semi-finals before narrowly losing out to Robbie Green and Ross Montgomery. To reach the last four of such an event shows that the talent is there in our local league and it will hopefully lead to more success.

There was no league action this week as it was the Northern Ireland Individual qualifiers with 40 players entering to try and make it to the Emerald Roadhouse in Finaghy on 19th January 2013. Nine players made it through and they include Sam Frazer, Martin Murray, Terry Morrow, Paul White, Steven Duff, Rab Lewis, Dee Breen, Anthony Crewe and Tommy McErlean.

On a disappointing note The Railway Bar have withdrawn from the league and all their results so far will be declared void slightly changing the league table which now has three teams joint top after five games played.

The table standings are: Celtic 8 pts; Drumgor 8; INF 8; Eire Og 7; Stables 3; Premier 2; Clan Eireann 1; Trojans 1.

This weeks fixtures are INF v Drumgor, Clann Eireann v Premier, Trojans v Eire Og.
