The beautiful Ramada Plaza Hotel in Belfast was the venue last Saturday morning for the selection process of Special Olympic Athletes from all 9 counties of Ulster to find out if they or their team mates had been fortunate enough to be selected for the next phase in the four year cycle.
The next round of competition will be the Special Olympics Ulster Games in Antrim Forum on Fri 28th and Sat 29th June 2013. Eagles athletes had preformed really really well at the Area Games two weeks ago and there had a good chance of advancing to the next level. The draw got underway at 11am and took almost 2 hours to complete with representitives from all the Ulster Clubs plus the SO Ulster Officials and a number of neutrals to oversee the process.
The selection process is made in a number format and the actual athletes name isn’t released until the draw is complete so when the final list of names was posted up Eagles Club Coach Paul Sweeney, like a number of others was at the notice board with an air of excited if nervous anticipation.
The list of Eagles going forward to the Ulster Games are Michael Duddy, Shanice Carlin,Gemma Sproule, Ciran McCaffrey, Francis McCrory, Daniel McCrory,Patrick Trainor, Steven Moore, Noel Mulgrew, Seorlaith O Hagan and Tiernan McShane. There are some substitute places also selected but those names are held in SO Ulster offices as they are subs selected from all Ulster West Region.
In total 150 places were up for grabs and our sister club Starbreakers Carrickmore in which Paul is also Head Coach and a number of Volunteers work with had 10 athletes selected in Sean Donaghey, Kevin Douch, Connor McMahn, Francis Morris, Lee Mitchell, Sean Douch, Aoife Kerr, Gemma Fox, Paul Gordon and Sammy Jo Sweeney. That meant the Tyrone based clubs had taken 21 of the 150 places available.
This is a wonderful total and a massive number for the Eagles club who haven’t been together a year yet. The next step in the process is to recieve the official confirmation in hard copy have the parents sign o th e dotted line to confirm the athletes acceptance of his or her place and then start the long training process to get ready for 2013.
Well done to all those who made the Ulster Finals and also well done to those who were not selected this time. The club will continue to train and compete as a club supporting are athletes going forward and supporting our athletes in the club setting. Thank you to everyone for making this possible from the Eagles Team.
