Golf: Quinn edges out Kolbohm in Killymoon shop sweep

With the return of more clement weather conditions there was a much improved turnout of members competing in the weekly shop sweep over the last two weeks.

The competition which ran from Saturday February 15th to 21st saw Shop Sweep Brian Quinn claim top spot with a 38 point tally over the 15 holes just pipping Martin Kolbohm on countback.

A point in arrears was Seamus McAleer who took third and fourth place went to John Joe Canavan on 36 points. The best gross prize was won by Ryan McClintock with a two over par 59 to his credit.

Brian was also among the prizes in the competition which ended last Friday 28th Feb and improved his tally to 40 points but slipped into second spot with Lenny Kelly taking the honours with an exceptional score of 41 points over the shortened course.

John Joe Canavan proved another consistent performed with his 38pt tally earning a third spot finish to go with his fourth from the previous week and Colm Devlin and Sam Ferguson took 4th and 5th respectively with 37 points each. Bryan Martin collected the gross prize with a 1 under tally of 58.

Entry Sheets for Martin Whittle’s Captain’s Drive – In on Saturday 15 March are available in the Pro Shop. This year again the Drive – In will take the form of a 4 Person Team Scramble with shotgun starts at 08.30am and 12.30pm. For the first time four teams of ladies will participate in the traditional season opener. The Entry Fee of £5, to include Irish Stew, will be payable in the Professional Shop at time of entry on the sheet. Entries will close at 4pm on Wednesday 12 March and the draw for teams and starting tees will be made available to members on the club website from 10am on Thursday 13 March. Paddy Dargan will provide live musical entertainment before and after the Prize Presentation which will take place at 6pm.

There is a full programme of entertainment and competitions over the Saint Patrick’s Weekend. The weekend begins with the Friday Evening Quiz which will have a special Saint Patrick’s flavour. Saturday brings the season opening Captain’s Drive – In and live music will be provided by Paddy Dargan between 5 and 7.30pm.

On Sunday 16 March there will be a Traditional Music Session in the Members’ Bar from 7 – 10.30pm and the week – end closes with the Open Shamrock Stableford on Saint Patrick’s Day 17 March. Members are reminded that from 5pm on Friday 14 March until 11pm on Monday 17 March all beverages paid on the smart card will be charged at a discount of 12.5%.

The Friday Evening Series of Table Quizzes continued on last Friday evening when the team comprising Alistair and Nick Laird, Daphne Ruddock and James McBride took the spoils. Winners in the raffle were Tony Martin, James Mc Bride and Colin Greer. The quiz continues next Friday March 7 in the Members’ Bar teeing off at 8.30pm. Teams are limited to a maximum of 6 persons and entry is £3 per person. In conjunction with the quiz series Fairways Restaurant is offering an “Early Bird” Menu between 5 and 7pm.Why not gather up a team and come along for the craic!!!!!

The lucky letter drawn on Saturday were FHPT and once again the jackpot survived and rises to 2900. Consolation prizes went to Diane ANDERSON and Paul McGonigle.
