Junior Cup success for Moyola Park

IN a thrilling finale, the team representing Moyola Park Golf Club in this years Ulster section of the Irish Junior Foursomes, secured the title by the narrowest of margins. Played at Cairndhu, in their semi final the Castledawson side defeated Masserene by one hole to set up a decider against fancied Royal Portrush.

However, here too, Moyola were in superb form and took the trophy with another one hole win. Well done to captain Kieran Fields and his team who now go on to the National Final which will be played at Galway.

The Rollform sponsored Stableford held at Moyola Park Golf Club, brought a narrow win for 14 handicapper Aidan Kearney.

His return of 38pts was matched by John Mackle (14) , only a better back nine deciding the outcome. A close third was Liam G.O’Neill (20) 37pts, while best gross prize goes to Luke Lennox (-3) 66.

Handicap category winners were ; 0-9, Stephen Bateson (3) 37pts ; 10-13, Mark McSwiggan (13) 36pts (on better back nine ) ; 14-17, Michael Gormley (14) 36pts (on better back nine ); 18 plus, Tony Scullion (21) 37pts (on better back nine).

There were 11 optional twos winners, each getting 6 golf balls.

A Four Ball Better Ball event brought success for the pairing of Michael P. McNeill (10) and Kenny Averill (5) with 42pts.

In second place were Cecil Brown (9) and Damien Larkin (8), also 42pts, while third were Gary Atkinson (10) and Geoffrey Caskey (9) 40pts (on better back nine ).

There were 6 optional twos winners, each getting 4 golf balls, while Malachy McKee recorded a hole in one during this competition.

There continues to be good interest in the weekly Seniors (over 50s) Open Stablefords. And, latest events have produced some very close outcomes with results being - 1st, J.Gregg (24) 39pts (on better back nine ) ; 2nd, C.Collier (32) 39pts ; 3rd, T.McGuire (20) 37pts; 4th, G.McOscar (16) 36pts .

On this occasion, Alex McDonnell scored a hole in one and picks up no less than 111 golf balls, while there were also 2 optional twos winners. And, 1st – G.McOscar (17) 39pts ; 2nd,R.Francis (27) 38pts (on better back nine ) ; 3rd, M.Crozier (11) 38pts ; 4th, J.McKenna (15) 37pts.

Here, visitor from Dunmury, C. Judge, scored a hole in one for 15 golf balls.

The Moyola Ladies Cup competition has been declared null and void and will now be played on Wednesday 14th September.

Congratulations to Alma McCrone and Bridget Bradley who have won the annual Watterson Cup competition. It was a hard fought victory over Molly Quinn and Bernie O’Neill, with success only coming after the 21st hole !

Names are now being taken for the annual Coast & Country Alliance League. This competition starts at Moyola Park on 27th September, anyone wishing to play, asked to enter names on the sheet provided. The Friendship Cup against Roganstown has been rescheduled for Saturday 22nd October.

Anyone interested in travelling, are asked to sign the appropriate sheet on the noticeboard.

The annual Salver club Matchplay semi finals must be played by this Friday, 26th August.

Second leg of the annual Sperrin Cup against Killymoon, will be held in Castledawson this Saturday.

On Sunday, there will be a Two Person Scramble ( Stroke), while Monday continues the Seniors (over 50s) Open Stablefords.

The ladies will host “The Girls” and also The Love Cup 18 Hole Stablefords next Wednesday, 31st August.
