Mid-Ulster based Northern Stars, Northern Ireland’s only women’s Olympic Handball Club, sit top of the IOHA league after Sunday’s series of matches.
The games were fiercely contested, with four teams on the day: Northern Stars, Dublin International, Astra and University College Dublin. Bottom of the table Lughnasa were unable to travel.
There was 6 two minute suspensions, numerous yellow cards and over 10 penalties overall on a highly competitive and hard fought day.
Northern Stars got their day off to a great start with a closely contested 16-14 win against Astra. It was a fast paced, at times bad tempered clash with both teams trading points and the Stars holding out for an important win.
Their second game of the day ended in a 16-10 defeat to the students of UCD.
The Dubliners played a high energy, attacking game running up a big lead at half time. The Stars pegged UCD back but ran out of steam with the students picking up their second win of the day.
Despite defeat to UCD, the Northern Stars moved to first place on 8 points, with Astra, UCD and Dublin International on 6 points each and Lughnasa rooted to the foot of the table looking for their first win.
