THE NEBSSA Athletics finals were hosted recently at the Antrim Forum Leisure Complex.
The School’s Athletics event attracts a huge number of young athletes from all across the North Eastern Education Board Area with athletes having had to battle their way through regional qualification heats to make it to the big day in Antrim.
The Antrim Forum Complex then offers those lucky enough to make it to the finals the opportunity to compete at a state of the art athletics facility and brings that Olympic feeling just a little bit loser for the participants.
The Athletics team from St Patrick’s Maghera had a number of competitors present on finals day and they all represented the College excellently on the day. This was the final event of the season for the College Athletics team and brought to a close a busy season of training and competition which had started out in September of the school year.
Coached by Irish Senior Triple Jumper, Mary Devlin, the St Patrick’s athletes had an excellent day of competition with pride of place going to Year 8 pupil Cathair McGilligan who won Gold in the Year 8 Boys’ Long Jump Final, closely followed by Sinead Mellon who won Silver in the Year 10 Girls’ 300metres and Bronze in both the 200metres and the Triple Jump. Other notable performances on the day for St Patrick’s saw Orla Higgins miss out on a Year 10 Girls’ Triple Jump Bronze by only 3 centimetres while Nadine O’Boyle, (Year 10 Girl’s Shot Putt) and Orla Corrigan (Year 8 Girls’ 800metres) also gave excellent performances on the day.
