Seconds miss out against Inst

Rainey II 23 Instonians II 28

The outcome of the Conference 3A meeting of Rainey OB II and Instonians II at Hatrick Park mattered little, but the inability to close out a game that was there for the taking will have annoyed the home mentors.

Having come from behind to lead after ten minutes of the second half, they wound up on the wrong end of a 28-23 scoreline.

Instonians were first to score, but Rainey, with a few young players handed a debut, replied through No.8 Shiels and centre McMurray did well to create an opening for flanker Dawson.

The Shawsbridge men regained the lead when a blindside break by their scrum-half left Rainey clutching at shadows. Rainey out-half Devlin went close with a penalty on the stroke of half-time.

Devlin had better luck on the restart and then converted a try by Shiels which came from a turnover. A combination of pace and slack tackling resulted in an Instonians try at the posts and they broke the length of the field for another after Rainey had laid siege to their line.

Rainey worked their way into some more fine attacking positions, but had to settle for a sole penalty.Instonians finished the stronger to take the points.
