THE 9th running of the annual mountain race over Slieve Gallion will take place on Saturday 8th October. Using the original course, the 4.5 miles route starts and finishes at Inniscarn Forest, taking in 380 meters of climb as it ascends through the forest and out on to the open mountain. A fully marked loop will take you to parts of the mountain not normally visited, before rounding to the summit cairn and descending through the forest to the finish.
This mountain race, the finale of the 2011 Northern Ireland Mountain Running Championships, is suitable for all runners, from the expert mountain runners travelling from the Antrim Hills and the Mournes, right through to the running novice, “giving it a go”. A special welcome is extended to local participants, for whom there is a local category and prizes. Hopefully runners from the Sperrins will give the visitors a race to remember, as they have done in the past.
Registration will be open from 10am at the Car Park in Inniscarn Forest, entry fee is £5 for affiliated runners and £6 for unaffiliated runners, the race will start at 11am.
Runners are advised to wear grippy/studded shoes and be prepared to carry a waterproof jacket, as conditions on the open mountain can be inclement at this time of year. There will be tea and sandwiches afterwards, with the prize giving around 12.30pm.
