Thirds warm up for cup final with Omagh victory

Rainey III 19 Omagh III 18

Rainey O.B. III warmed up for the Forster Cup final by beating league leaders Omagh 111 by the narrowest of margins at Hatrick Park.

After a very slow start to the season, Rainey have steadily climbed the table and this 19-18 victory puts a top three finish within reach.

With wind advantage, Rainey built up a 14-8 half-time lead. Centres McBride and Murray were try scorers, with out-half Walls adding the points.

Wing Smith scored Rainey’s third try, but Omagh hit back and would have snatched the points had a last minute conversion not proved too difficult.

Runaway Section Five leaders Dungannon IV will be Rainey’s opponents in the final on Saturday.

Defeated only once all season, they traditionally have a sprinkling of very experienced players togging out at this level.

Rainey have some powerful runners who should relish the open spaces if they can win enough possession.

Kick-off is at 1pm with The Gordon West Cup final, between Larne and Letterkenny, following at 3pm.

Rainey won this trophy in 1972 and were beaten finalists in 1977 and in 1999. Teams in Sections 4 and 5 of the Junior League compete for the Forster Cup.
