Nevin was ‘a role model for all’

WARM tributes were paid to rugby star Nevin Spence this week, after the 22-year-old died alongside his brother Graham and father Noel in a tragic accident on the Hillsborough family’s farm.

Team mates, coaches and those from the world of rugby spoke of an ‘outstanding young player’, following his death on Saturday.

Ulster player Nevin was described as a ‘role model for all’, by his high school coach.

Neil Hinds, the Master in Charge of Rugby at Wallace High School said: “He always led by example and he inspired his team mates with his ability in attack and defence.

“Nevin played in the 2007 Schools’ Cup Final against RBAI but one of his most memorable moments was in the quarter final of The Schools’ Cup vs. BRA, when he scored three breathtaking tries.

“Nevin stood out on the pitch and spectators held their breath when he was on the ball. He terrorised defences with his terrific ability and awareness of space.

“He was a glass half full person who possessed kindness, humility and warmth. He left a positive feeling with those whom he spoke to and it was amazing to see such a humble and quietly spoken person transform into a world class rugby player when on the pitch.

“He was a role model for all pupils in The Wallace High School and regularly came back to school to watch matches, talk to pupils and say hello again to staff.

“Only last Friday, he was helping staff with the organisation of a function in school. Nothing was too much trouble for him and he always asked about school life and his beloved 1stXV.”

Billy Glynn. President of the IRFU, said: “Nevin Spence was an outstanding young player which was evident from his progression through the representative ranks and the game has been robbed of a very talented young man.

“The rugby community in Ireland is a very close knit one and there has been widespread shock and an outpouring of grief at this news. On behalf of Irish rugby, I would like to offer our heartfelt support to the family, friends and team-mates of Nevin during this difficult time.”

Paying tribute to Nevin, Ulster captain Johann Muller said: “Nevin Spence was a highly skilful and gifted rugby player. He was utterly committed to Ulster and was enormously proud to represent his Province. He was determined to be the best that he could be and I have no doubt that he would have gone on to play for Ireland on many occasions. He was the kind of player that inspired others with his attitude in training and sheer will to win in matches.”

• Ulster’s match against Zebre due to be played today (Friday) in Parma has been postponed to a later date. A moment of silence will be observed at all RaboDirect PRO12 matches this coming weekend.
