Seconds dominate over Cookstown College

Lurgan College 2nd XI 2 Cookstown HS 0

LURGAN College Seconds dominated this game to claim a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Julie Morrow and Gemma McKitterick.

There were spells throughout the match where Cookstown counterattacked with pace, even penetrating the College circle on a couple of occasions, but the visitors remained composed and swiftly dealt with any problems Cookstown threw at them.

The College side showed much more discipline this week and played the hockey that they are capable of as they kept their shape and spread the ball beautifully. Time and again the midfield worked very well with the forward line in attacking, but the final pass or shot let the team down in the opening fifteen minutes.

Midway through the first half Julie Morrow showed her calibre when she received a pass on the edge of the circle and calmly shot wide of the keeper to score the opener for Lurgan.

After the restart, the College found a new gear, and a textbook move from right back through to right wing saw Megan Sloan send a superb cross to find Gemma McKitterick who calmly slotted the ball home.

This was a well deserved second goal, rewarding the persistance of the team and of Gemma who was a thorn in the side for Cookstown the entire match.

Next week both squads travel to St Andrew's College in Dublin to play morning fixtures and will then go to Alexandra College where the Under 16 and 18 Hockey Interprovincials are being played.

There the players will offer their support to the four Lurgan College girls selected for Ulster; Bethany and Serena Barr, Hannah Grieve and Louise Murray.
