Seconds unlucky in Lurgan

BALLYMONEY second XI travelled to Lurgan to play Lurgan Ladies 2nd XI in a competetive league match on Saturday.

After a late start and a long journey, Lurgan thought they had the advantage over Ballymoney and came out on a strong attack.

The seconds battled hard but unfortunately Lurgan, being a strong side pushed the ball into feet to win a short corner.

From this well worked short corner the ball ended up in the corner of the net just slipping beyond our young goal-keeper, Danielle Stewart. The whole team worked well together to keep the score line 1-0 until half time.

After half time the team went out to fight for a much deserved goal. After a few attacks from the mid-field, consisting of Sarah Gardner, Lauren Mullan and Karen Morrisson, the forwards were hungry for the ball in the circle. Sue Ruddockgot the ball and striked on target from the edge of the circle and Cara Ferguson was on the keeper's toes to finish off the strike.

This upset the Lurgan side and they came back fighting.

They made a strong attack down Ballymoney's left hand side and the defence consisting of Clare Black, Sarah Black and Rachel McCahon, tried their hardest to get back and defend but unfortunately Rebecca Greer and Danielle Stewart couldn't stop the Lurgan side from scoring once again.

Joanne, made a few good runs down the right hand side into the circle but was unfortunate that Lurgan’s big defence got the better of Ballymoney and pushed them back out of the circle.

The water base pitch made the ball bounce a lot and because Ballymoney were not used to this pitch surface, the ball bounced over Ballymoney sticks and it got to Lurgans left link and she ran it into the circle. With an unexpected reverse stick shot, the ball flew past Ballymoney's strong defence and was in the back of the net before they knew it.

After 68 hard worked minutes, Ballymoney knew they needed to step it up and won a short corner but were unfortunate not to get a goal before the final whistle blew.
