stephen takes irish youth singles title

Steven Kirkwood followed in his brother Robert’s footsteps when he won the Irish Bowling Association Youth Singles at Larne Bowling Club on Saturday.

It was a great win for the Hilden player, who won his way through the Private Greens Championships and had a one-sided 21-6 win over A. Clyde, Dunluce in the Irish semi-finals.

It was that bit more difficult against M. Albert, Balmoral, in the final but Kirkwood had still something to spare in a 21-14 win, though he did slip up over the closing stages before clinching the win.

But spare a thought for the Neil Mulholland rink of John and Gareth McCloughlin and Ivan Craig, who battled their way to the Irish finals and scored a one shot semi-final win over a Dunbarton rink.

Mulholland started badly and was 11-3 down but came back to 16-18 and at the last end they missed out on the count for a second shot which would have earned them a tie end.

It was disappointment in the final when the Lisnagarvey four lost by a shot to a rink from St James’ Gate, but it was a fine performance to get so far.
