Terrific Trevor takes the turkey at Portstewart

TREVOR Nutt topped the turkey charts at Portstewart Golf Club on Saturday with an exceptional score of 39 points.

Why exceptional? Because the 39 points were scored over fifteen holes.

Trevor had blanks at the second, the ninth and the thirteenth. However, the rest of the scorecard looks very well, with seventeen points logged for the front nine and birdies bagged at the par four eleventh and the par three fifteenth, these yielding eight stableford points.

Twenty-two points were picked up coming in and gave Trevor his winning total of 39.

In runners-up spot, one behind, came David McLaughlin who, in spite of playing with his dad Paddy, carded 38 points to be one clear in second place.

Davy covered the front nine in a three over par gross for 20 points and added another 18 on the inward nine. His only blip came at the difficult seventeenth where only a single point was picked up.

Stephen Macauley was third and also scored 20 points out with a more up and down pattern. Several one pointers were logged but were balanced by a birdie four at the par five seventh and five other three pointers. On the back nine two bad blanks were evident at ten and twelve and resulted in a mere 17 points to be added to the first 20.

Gary Wolfe returned a fairly average outward nine of 16 points which included a blank at the sixth.

All turned round on the back nine with 20 points accumulated and strong finish to push Alan Campbell into fifth position on countback. Alan also had the obligatory blank hole, his being on the par five seventh, and this kept he outward nine total to 17 points.

A better back nine was played with a birdie four at the thirteenth to give Alan 19 back and an overall total of 36. The final bird went to the course designer Des Giffin with another 36 points.

A nice birdie four at Thistly Hollow was negated by a no score at the fifth and gave Des seventeen points out. A steadier back nine with the only six coming at the par five thirteenth yielded 19 more points and sixth spot for a turkey.
