Two big games lined up for Linfield anniversary

LINFIELD are lining up the possibility of two glamour games to celebrate their 125th anniversary year which kicks-off on January 1, 2011.

Club Chairman Jim Kerr confirmed to the Star he had been in talks with a few 'big' clubs in a bid to mark the historic milestone in style."It's a very special year for Linfield Football Club and part of the celebrations will hopefully include a couple of attractive games. You need to bring big clubs for something like that and we have irons in the fire in both England and Europe.

"The anniversary year will run from January to December. However, before we can think about match dates we have to wait until the work at the gound is complete."

To celebrate their 100 years Linfield played World champions Argentina in Belfast in 1990, losing 1-0. Matches against Manchester United, Liverpool and Rangers have always proved a huge crowd puller in the past and fans will be hoping the opposition will be in that A list category.

The Blues begin the defence of their league title on Saturday when they welcome Ballymena United to Windsor Park. See season preview for both Linfield and Lisburn Distillery on page 53.
