Newry II 0 Cookstown II 4
COOKSTOWN II extended their winning run to four matches with a big win on the road against Newry
The County Down men are a tough opposition, especially at their Downshire Road base, but Cookstown, in unfamiliar white tops, were quick out of the traps and scarce gave them opportunity to score.
Andy McWhirter started the scoring with his best ever goal for the Reds; he took the ball outside the 23m line and beat four defenders down the base line before reversing past the Newry goalkeeper.
The score remained 1-0 until five minutes into the second half when a great move by Nelson, Wilson and Smyth left Tony Johnston with an easy finish.
Great skills by Atkinson and Ian Johnston down the right saw the schoolboy send a great cross into the danger area and give a Newry defender no choice but to turn the ball into his own net.
A couple of short corners went askew because of a bobbly pitch before Andy Smyth put the game beyond the home team with a brilliant finish under pressure from two defenders and the goalkeeper.
Cookstown II: Michael Anderson, David Atkinson, Daniel Crooks, Gavin Butler, Mark Wilson, Andrew Mcwhirter, Andrew Ferguson, Richard Nelson, Tony Johnston, Andrew Smyth, Ian Johnston, Mark Rooney
Man of the Match: Mark Wilson; brilliant in defence and showed great attitude going forward
Many thanks to Ken Crooks and Stevie Smyth for umpiring and management. Get well soon to Mark Rooney who got a knock on his noggin.
